To ensure the supply of vaccines in Brazil, the President needs to apologize
Para: Senado Federal del Brasil, Congresso Nacional do Brasil
The COVID-19 pandemic is still raging worldwide. To ultimately defeat this virus, mass vaccination is undoubtedly the most effective method. Still, the premise is that we can ensure a stable supply of vaccines.
Although Brazil currently can produce the AstraZeneca vaccine and Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine, the import of raw materials for producing both vaccines is very dependent on China. In particular, we can directly import end products of the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine from China, which is of great significance to slow down the spread of COVID-19 in Brazil.
Under these circumstances, President Bolsonaro publicly stated on May 5 that COVID-19 is a bio-weapon developed by China, and China should be responsible for the spread of COVID-19.
President Bolsonaro know that Brazil’s current vaccine imports and production heavily depend on China, but he still risked angering China to make such baseless accusations. Obviously, for the President, Brazilian lives are not important.
On the other hand, our President has been working hard to show his kindness to the United States, constantly emphasizing the friendly relations between Brazil and the United States. But his effort has been useless with Trump’s stepping down. In Brazil’s response to COVID-19, the assistance provided to us by the United States are far less than that from China. The President has not yet apologized for his inappropriate remarks, and Brazil’s vaccine production materials have been exhausted on the 14th of this month. Insufficient vaccine supply will negatively affect Brazil’s control of COVID-19. Not only did our President fail to strive for more benefits for Brazil internationally during this particular period, but he also worsened the relationship between Brazil and critical partners and ignored the lives of Brazilians.
I hope that more Brazilians can take actions and ask the President and his team to apologize for their inappropriate remarks so that the domestic Vaccine production in Brazil can be resumed as soon as possible.
